Small Group Exercise

Deliberative Inquiry

COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

  1. Review the Group Oral Project Assignment
  2. Who are the primary stakeholders in your group’s selected case?  How will you secure reliable information (from credible sources) regarding the stakeholders’ beliefs, concerns, values, and vested interests?

  1. What else will you need to know in order to develop a clear, representative, and fair overview of the facts in the case selected for your presentation?

  1. Frame two deliberative questions the group will need to answer to complete the project successfully.

  1. Finally, discuss your understanding of what Cisneros is seeking to convey.

  1. Once you’ve completed all of the steps above, write your two deliberative questions (in response to Step 4) and a concise statement of what you believe Cisneros is seeking to convey (Step 5) on the board.

EXPLORING ISSUES RELATED TO DECEPTION

Professor Josina M. Makau

COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

1.      Identify a morally complex “real-world” case involving deception.

2.      Apply a deontological framework (such as Kant’s Categorical Imperative) to the case. Using this framework, was the deception morally justified?  Why or why not?

3.      Apply the Principle of Veracity to the case. Using this approach, was the deception morally justified? Why or why not?

4.      Finally, explore what Cisneros is seeking to convey in the handout.

5.      Once you’ve completed the five steps above, put your understanding of Cisneros’ “guiding idea” on the board.
